The Chablis Inn is last place on our list of Napa hotels—meaning it is by some measure the least popular. Since plenty of beloved places are near the bottom of the list, we figure there must be something funny about the ranking. So we were hoping that the last hotel would be the subject of wild raving by grateful customers—it would have been deliciously ironic.

Well, there are no raves—but there are few complaints, either, just measured, solid praise. The Chablis Inn is a motel, but it’s a good motel, and they offer some services and perks that no one else does.

The location is good, of course; this is Napa, after all, and even within Napa it’s pretty well-placed. The hotel is just a mile from both Napa Valley Drifters Hot Air Balloon and California Wine Tours, and only two miles from the Napa Valley Opera House. Two miles isn’t really very far. Imagine walking back to the hotel some evening, arm in arm, perhaps, with your beloved, the soaring tunes of the opera still ringing through your head….

There are certainly places that mostly offer a place to store yourself while you sleep, and in the Napa Valley, where there are so many interesting things to do (and spend money on), cheap and basic definitely has its charms, but we wouldn’t put the Chablis in this category. It is cheap, certainly, but we don’t think you’ll find a stay here unpleasant.

Amenities start out simple enough. There’s an outdoor pool, and all rooms have free wireless Internet, coffee maker and complimentary gourmet coffee, a wet bar with mini-refrigerator, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, cable TV, and a telephone with data port, voicemail, and TTY capabilities. Some rooms also have whirlpool tubs with massaging shower heads. The hotel is non-smoking, and parking is free. So far so good.

But the Chablis is also rated two out of five possible “eco-leaves,” although they don’t specify which environmentally responsible practices have earned them this rating. If two out of five does not sound especially good, bear in mind that the vast majority of lodging options in Napa do not claim to have any environmentally responsible programs at all.

And the Chablis is pet-friendly, or at least dog-friendly. Call ahead to reserve a spot for your dog, and remember there’s a twenty five dollar fee for canine guests. It is the dog-friendliness that suggests the Chablis might be a bit different from most hotels; if you want to go out without your dog (which not all pet-friendly places will let you do), they may ask permission to take your dog into their office, so he or she won’t get lonely while you’re out. They’ll also give you the contact information for local animal hospitals and the nearest emergency vet. Now that’s service!

They also provide a suggested “Dog Lover” itinerary, listing parks, restaurants, and wineries where both you and your dog will be welcome. There are four other suggested itineraries with themes; the Frugalista, the Napa Native, the Sipper, and the Thrill Seeker. The Frugalista, in case you are wondering, is for visitors who want to have a good time without spending a lot of money—it is possible, even in Napa. There’s a trip adviser you can talk to as well, if you want to brainstorm ideas for your trip one on one. It’s a little, simple thing, to offer targeting trip advice, but it is such little things that make the difference between just any old motel and a nugget of low-key awesomeness.

So if the Chablis doesn’t quite receive raves, maybe it should. And last but not least…the Chablis is last but not least.

If you’re going to stay at the Candlelight Inn Bed and Breakfast, you might as well stay five days in a row, especially if you’re relatively new to the Napa Valley. The reason is that while many area hotels and inns offer suggestions for exploring the region, the Candlelight actually provides a complete suggested itinerary—but it’s five days long.

The first day features wine tasting and suggests routes so you can drive from winery to winery, starting and ending at the Candlelight Inn and without wasting time or gas. The day finishes back at the Inn with complimentary wine and cheese, and a relaxing in-room massage. The second day is focused on the town of Napa, and includes more wine and some amazing food. On the third day they recommend going to the town of Calistoga, with its petrified forest, its hiking trails, and its spas. Day four begins with an early morning hot air balloon ride, then continues with window shopping, and ends up with dinner—there’s a nap back at the Inn scheduled in there somewhere, too. The fifth and final day takes you to St. Helena for golf, plus either hiking or riding, window shopping, wine tasting, and more food. This isn’t a package you have to book through the Inn; you can do all these things on your own, except for getting the in-room massage at the end of the day. But the itinerary is organized around the Inn as a starting point, and you might as well stay at the Inn and take full advantage of all of the Innkeeper’s careful planning.

Not that you really have to stay all five days, of course. There actually may be a two or three night minimum for weekends, depending on the time of year when you visit, but if you’d prefer a shorter stay you can always ask. Sometimes something will open up.

The Candlelight Inn Bed and Breakfast is housed in a building that was built back in 1929 by a local postmaster. The English Tudor style architecture adds both interest and beauty to the property. Breakfast is served in three courses, beginning with fresh fruits and yogurt and moving on to a choice between pancake or French toast dishes. Then, finally, you get more complex and creative delights, such as a spinach and mushroom strata seasoned with tarragon. The property boasts a pool, high speed wireless Internet, complimentary drinks and snacks, free onsite parking, sending and receiving faxes at no extra charge, the delivery of a daily newspaper, and a movie library. The grounds are not extensive, but they do feature a number of big, shady redwood trees to lounge around under, and of course there’s the Napa Creek.

There are ten rooms, which is fairly large for a bed and breakfast in Napa. All ten rooms have air conditioning, a flat screen TV with DVD and CD player, a private bathroom, bath robes, a hair dryer, and a telephone. Most also have a private deck or a balcony, a two-person marble whirlpool bath, and a romantic fire place. Each room has its own design and personality.

Customer reviews are solidly positive; visitors rave about the excellent, friendly service and the great food. Many compliment the Innkeepers by name. Oddly, the innkeepers’ names are not consistent from review to review. Presumably the innkeepers work as a team, and customers rave about whichever team members are on duty during their stay.

When looking up the Candlelight Inn on the Internet, bear in mind that it’s a popular name; there are Candlelight Inns in several different states. Being aware of this might same you some time, as it’s all too easy, otherwise, to waste fifteen minutes reading all about some hotel in Pennsylvania by mistake.

That that we have anything against Pennsylvania.

At the Hillview Country Inn, you’ll be welcomed into the innkeeper’s homes—quite literally. They live at the Inn, and the common areas are essentially their living room. This is both good news and bad news.

If you like the homey touch, they’ve certainly got it. By all accounts, the couple who owns the Hillview are excellent hosts, always delighted to share their home and the whole, marvelous Napa Valley with visitors. They’ll give you a tour, offer you cookies and candy and homemade apricot brandy, and happily keep you company at breakfast if it’s company you want. There are even four cats wandering about. Homes always seem homier with cats.

If you like cats, that is. The cats are not allowed in guest bedrooms, but they get pretty much everywhere else, meaning that cat hair is a fact of life at the Hillview. This won’t bother people who keep cats themselves, but not everyone would choose to live with cats, and therein lies the other side of the Hillview’s hominess. The place is a home, and along with that comes the pets, the mild clutter, the occasional dirtiness and mustiness, and the minor but cumulative maintenance problems that homes typically have. We don’t mean the place is a pit, but—look, isn’t there something around your house you’ve been meaning to get to for years? It’s like that. Not everybody wants to vacation in someone’s home. Some people vacation to get away from home.

But of course, if you want to stay in a hotel, there are plenty available to choose from. The Hillview Inn provides a different service, and by all accounts the innkeepers provide it very well. And we like cats, so to us it sounds like a great place to stay.

The Inn is a converted 100 year old farmhouse. It no longer has its own farm, but the grounds still sport fruit trees and gardens. There’s a narrow stairway to negotiate to get up to the rooms, which will cause an obvious problem for some, but for others the stairs will be a charming reminder of the property’s farmhouse history. And the innkeepers will be happy to carry your bags up if that helps.

There are only four rooms at the Inn, each with its own bathroom. Each has its own character, but they are fairly similar in terms of their amenities; queen-sized bed, phone, TV, a nice view of either the garden or of nearby vineyards, and often sitting rooms or a little nook where you can curl up and read on rainy days when you don’t feel like going out and exploring Napa.

When you do feel like exploring Napa, there are, of course, the wineries. Everyone knows the Napa Valley has hundreds of world class wineries. You can explore on your own, or join any number of tasty organized tours. Critically acclaimed restaurants, live music, art galleries, theater, and museums of history and art also spice the region with culture. What you may not realize is that Napa is also a great place for outdoor recreation. Get out on the network of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, or take a road bike for a spin on the Valley’s miles of quiet, scenic roads. Do you like white water padding? Get out on the river. Prefer quieter water? Farther upstream, the Napa River has that, too.
And however you spend your day, you’ll have this friendly little home to come back to.

The Hillview Inn is a bed and breakfast, and as such, check-in is at precisely 4 00 PM. If you want to arrive at some other time, you need to call at least 48 hours ahead to make arrangements. Front desk hours will vary, too. If you have questions about this, you can call the property, and if you do, be sure to say hello to the cats.

Ok, first cool thing? The Napa Valley Bed and Breakfast Stahlecker House is not only currently owned by people named Stahlecker, they are also, respectively, a race car driver and an artist. The property was once an apple orchard, and then in the 1940’s a bakery was built here, followed by a home for the bakers. For the past twenty five years, of course, it has been the award-winning Stahlecker House.

There are five rooms, each with its own name, price, and range of amenities. All rooms have fire places, complimentary wireless Internet, and some form of television, ranging from a simple color TV to a home theater system. All rooms have some sort of bathroom, whether with a bathtub, a shower, or a two person whirlpool bath. No matter which room you stay in, you get fresh coffee, tea, soft drinks, lemonade, and chocolate cookies—and, of course, breakfast. The website does not describe the breakfast, other than to say “it has been voted the Best Breakfast in the Southwest!” but reliable reports speak glowingly of things like German pancakes and something called “drunken grapefruit,” which consists of grapefruit and Jack Daniels, baked, with sugar. Baked grapefruit? We admit to never having heard of this before. The customer who reported receiving the dish liked it.

“Drunken grapefruit” is just one of the things that sound just slightly odd here. For example, why don’t they say what their award-winning breakfast consists of? Why does the slide show for “Kira’s Rooms,” which is a two room suite, include a beautiful night shot of a suspension bridge with no road bed? The bridge is obviously is not part of the room. The breakfast is by candlelight, an elegant touch, though we wonder how the candle flames manage to compete with the bright morning sunlight. None of this is bad, just slightly odd. We are inclined to think that the oddness is either coincidental, some artifact of presentation, or an indication that the Stahlecker could have some interesting surprises up its sleeve. We’re rather rooting for the latter.

Certainly customers rave about the place, mostly concentrating their praise upon the service. The couple who own the Bed and Breakfast (the Stahleckers themselves), and the innkeeper (who is not, evidently, the same person) are friendly and personable, and happy to tell you all about the area. The place has a really homey feel to it, and some guests find it hard to leave in order to go explore wine country. If you can leave for the day, this is a great Bed and Breakfast to come “home” to. If you can’t leave, you can read, stroll the verdant grounds, or play puzzles and board games, or lawn croquet with other guests. There is a piano, if you know how to play. If you don’t know how to play, there is still a piano, and perhaps someone else can play for you? There is something very relaxing about any place where homemade music might casually drift through the air at any time. Coffee and tea are served every day at 5:30 PM.

Check in is at exactly 3:30 PM. If you want to arrive at some other time, you’ll need to call at least 48 hours ahead for instructions. This is pretty typical for bed and breakfasts, and like most bed and breakfasts, front desk hours will vary. Reservations are required, though you may be able to get last minute discounts if you’re calling around for somewhere to stay on short notice. If you have to cancel, they’ll need at least fourteen days’ notice. Over the weekend there is a two-night minimum, but somehow we think you won’t mind having to stay two nights.

The Napa Inn Bed and Breakfast occupies two buildings, both historic. The Napa Inn is a Queen Ann Victorian, originally built as a wedding gift in 1899. The Buford House, which faces a different street but shares a back garden and parking lot with the Napa Inn, is a generation older, built in 1877, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bed and Breakfast is proud of both buildings’ charm and beauty, as well as their relaxing historical ambiance. Historical ambiance notwithstanding, all rooms are equipped with refrigerators, TVs, with either VCR or DVD players, and CD players with iPod/MP3 hook-ups. Be aware that this is NOT the Napa River Inn. Despite the similar names, they are not similar establishments.

The Bed and Breakfast is not entirely unwelcoming to children, though whether children can stay depends upon their ages and what room you book. If a child-friendly room is not available when you make your reservation, you’ll have to hire a sitter. The pet policy is similar; some rooms accommodate pets, others do not. No matter what room you book, with or without children or animals, you’ll have wireless internet access and a private bathroom with a shower. You may also get a whirlpool tub or a fireplace, depending on which of the eight rooms and seven suites you pick. Prices vary by room.

No matter which room you sleep in, when you wake up there will be breakfast. You can choose from either of two breakfast time-frames, and you can mingle with other guests or occupy a private table with only your travel companion. Offerings may include vegetable quiche or apple pancakes, homemade granola, or peaches and cream bread pudding with amaretto sauce. In the evening, there’s port and sherry with a choice of cheeses, appetizers, and fresh fruit. Some evenings, a local winery will bring wine. There’s dessert, too, and reliable rumor has it that these people have the best cookies in the world. For the hours in between breakfast and sherry, you can walk to downtown Napa from here—that’s shops, restaurants, tasting rooms, live music, and art. The Bed and Breakfast will provide you with tasting passes for local wineries and maps. The region features hiking and horseback riding, paddling and hot air balloon rides, golf, and the famous Napa Valley Wine Train. Or, you could stay on the property all day, as a number of massages and other spa treatments are available either in room or in “spa rooms.” Sitting around looking at antiques and art (some of it produced by one of the Bed and Breakfast’s owners) receiving massages? Sounds like fun.

As fun as all this sounds, no one feature of the Bed and Breakfast met with rave reviews by customers—about the whole shebang, yes, there were raves. Plenty of people have come here and determined to come back, or even to never stay anywhere else again. But some people compliment this, others compliment that. We’re pretty sure you’ll find something you like, but we’re not sure what that something will be. If you really fall in love with the place, there is a price structure called “Stay a Little Longer,” where the third night of a three night stay is half off, the fourth night of a four night stay is free, and the last two nights of a seven night stay are both free. No, you cannot combine these options—you can’t stay seven nights and get the third night half off and the fourth, sixth, and seventh nights free, although we agree that would be cool. The offer doesn’t include weekends in the busy season. Unfortunately, you have to claim this offer when you make your reservation—you can’t use it to extend your stay on a whim. We think that would be cool, too.

First, the Cedar Gables Inn Bed and Breakfast will offer you cooking classes (you get to eat your coursework). We can’t offhand think of anyplace else in Napa that can offer something like this. The Inn occupies an historical mansion built originally for E. Wilder and Alice Churchill in 1892 as a wedding gift from Mr. Churchill’s father. The mansion was designed to echo the architecture of Renaissance England, and its style was almost unique in the region, and is still decorated to evoke an old English tavern. The nine rooms of the bed and breakfast are each named for someone connected with the property’s history. Prices and amenities vary by room. All rooms share some features, such as complimentary high speed Internet, chocolate truffles and a carafe of port, and beds with custom mattresses and really nice linens. Some rooms go above and beyond, with such treats as a whirlpool tub or a fireplace. One room has a claw-foot bathtub. Curiously, in-room massage is available only in seven of the nine rooms. If feathers cause a problem for you, you can request feather-free bedding when you make your reservation. All rooms, actually the whole building, are smoke-free, and the owners are serious about this. Anyone who violates the policy will be charged an extra night’s lodging, to cover the day the room must be left empty to air out. You are welcome to smoke outside, though.

Guests rave about this place. Cedar Gables is one of those rare establishments that gets almost entirely perfect reviews—occasionally guests will complain that they don’t like bed and breakfasts, or wish the rooms had televisions, but these are perks from another perspective. The three-course breakfast and the amazing service both win a lot of fans, and the happy hour in the evening over wine and light fare does not hurt matters at all. Possibly the only downside of the Inn is that children under 12 years old are not welcome, apparently due to fears that they might break some of the antiques. During the busier times of the year, you’ll probably have to stay multiple nights, though sometimes a single night will open up, so if that’s what you’re looking for, single nights are worth asking about. Reservations cannot be cancelled or shortened without at least two weeks’ notice. Front desk hours vary, and check in is at exactly 3:00 PM. If you want to arrive at some other time, you’ll have to call at least 48 hours ahead of time to make arrangements. This seems to be pretty typical of bed and breakfasts.

And, as is often the case in Napa, this bed and breakfast will be happy to play host for special events, such as weddings or business meetings. The property is really too small for one of those splendid “five hundred of our closest friends” shindigs, but they can host a smaller event for maybe twenty to fifty people. Their main wedding package includes all nine rooms for two nights (so you and your guests have somewhere to sleep), flowers, a minister, and cake service for twenty people, but not the actual cake. You do get local sparkling wine, optional catering, optional photographer, and such lovely add-ons as a guided wine tasting tour, couples massage at a local spa, and a hot air balloon ride for two. We have to say that although you could probably throw darts at a map of Napa while blindfolded and hit the location of several tempting destination wedding spots, we can’t think of another one that will put you in a balloon after the knot is tied. You could also do a much smaller event; they’ll provide a wedding cake for just four people. Obviously, this is what you would pick if you’re eloping, and the website refers to this option as the Elegant Elopement, but they also refer to it as Vow Renewal. For all the places in Napa where you can say “I do,” we’re not sure there are many others so prepared to help you say “I STILL do.”

We like that.

No, the McClelland Priest Bed and Breakfast Inn is not named after a priest called McClelland. The property is historic, going back to the late eighteen-hundreds, and was once a private mansion belonging first to the McClelland family, then to the Priest family. The third owner, innkeeper Celeste Carducci, runs the bed and breakfast with a homey attention to detail and a bit of her own way of doing things.

Basically? Visitors to the McClelland Priest come away convinced that the sun rises and sets by special arrangement with Celeste Carducci, and for all we know, the sun in Napa Valley might. She is friends with almost everyone in Napa, and showing her business card will generally get you a discount. She can give you advice on where to go and what to do, or even recommend walking or jogging routes particularly suited to your fitness level. She and an assistant prepare the two-course breakfast in the morning (count ‘em, TWO courses), and she holds a reception in the evening over wine and light snacks. She’s been described as part drinking buddy, part mom, and by all accounts is the heart and soul of the Inn.

The Inn is relatively small, built on a personal scale. There are just six rooms, each with a full bath. Many have Jacuzzis and fireplaces, and prices vary by room. Each room is named after a composer, writer, or artist. The whole property is densely decorated with rich antiques that suit the period of the building, though the mood is generally European, not Southwestern. With your room you get not only breakfast, the wine reception, and discounts at area wineries, but also a complementary tasting at the Carduccis’ own tasting room, Uncorked at Oxbow, and an equally complimentary bottle of wine. You can also, for an added fee, book private yoga or Pilates lessons, or any of a variety on in-room spa treatments, including massages, facials, and foot scrubs. There’s a treatment particularly for men that includes sports massage, and while we don’t see why women wouldn’t needs sports massages, too, spa treatments have an unfortunate reputation as a women’s-only thing, and reaching out deliberately to pamper male guests has to be a good thing.

This is kind of what we mean when we say Celeste does things her own way. There are certainly other places in Napa where you can get in-room spa treatments and private Pilates classes, but their mood is different. They tend to call themselves spas, and to boast of impersonally perfect professional service. They are not six-room bed and breakfasts owned by a whirlwind who cooks breakfast for you every morning.

As a bed and breakfast, there is a very definite check-in time of four o’clock. If you want to check in at some other time, you have to call at least 48 hours ahead of time. The front desk hours also vary, as is often the case with bed and breakfasts.

There appear to be no downsides to this B & B, unless you don’t like B & Bs. Some people don’t, just as some folks plain don’t like antique decor. But even customers who really didn’t want to stay at an antique-filled bed and breakfast acknowledge that if you like such establishments, you’ll like staying here

Of course, you could stay here all day, if you wanted to, but that’s clearly not the point. The McClellan Priest Bed and Breakfast Inn is a staging area for exploring all of Napa so you can use those discounts Celeste’s happy energy has earned you. The valley also boasts hiking and equestrian trails, both white water and flatwater paddling along the Napa river, your choice of golf courses. If you want high culture, the Napa Opera House, the Carolyn Parr Nature Museum, the Lincoln Theater, and the Napa Symphony only begin your list of options. For dinner, you’ve got a wide variety of excellent area restaurants to choose from—unless you’re still full from that excellent two-course breakfast?

Sometimes you read about some fancy-shmancy place, and it sounds just great until you read the scary customer reviews. You know that kind of place? Well, the Carneros Inn is really NOT that kind of place. If anything, the consistent customer raves make it sound even better than the Inn’s own website does.

Carneros is a true resort, spanning some 27 acres of scenic vineyard and apple orchard, with private little cottages of various sizes scattered throughout. One of those cottages is where you get to live during your stay here, and—this is just a quick example of Carneros awesomeness—the cottages have private outdoor showers. They also have indoor showers, of course, but how cool would it be to shower under the stars?

There are two complete pool and hot-tub complexes on the property, one that welcomes children and one that does not. You can choose among three on-site restaurants. The accommodations are all non-smoking. One line on the website points out that the whole property has wireless Internet, “if staying in touch with the world outside is important.” Well, we think that maybe while you are here, thinking about the outside world may not seem important.

There is the spa, for one thing. For hotel guests only, the spa features its own versions of the usual luxurious features (reportedly, they give the best massages available anywhere), and while you wait for your appointment, they’ll serve you chamomile tea or lemon water, so you stay properly hydrated while you’re in their hands.

For another, there are Bocce ball courts, a huge “fitness barn,” complimentary fitness classes like yoga, jogging, and Zumba on the weekends, private training sessions available by appointment, a small, high-end general store, and a clothing boutique, all on the resort grounds. Naturally, all this does not come cheap, but you get what you pay for.

But, if you must leave, you can always borrow a complimentary bicycle (as long as you are over 14 years old). Many of the roads around here are quiet and scenic and perfect for cycling. Talk to the concierge for suggestions on what to do while you’re out. There are the wineries, of course, hundreds of them, some of the best in the world. You can explore on the wineries your own, or you can join any of the tasting tours available in the valley. The region also boasts many fine restaurants, both art and history museums, art galleries, restaurants and coffee houses with live jazz, theaters, movie houses, even an opera house and a symphony. There is also an excellent network of hiking and equestrian trails. Do you like to paddle? The Napa Valley, like most valleys, has a river running through it. The Napa River runs quiet and slow in its lower reaches, and wild and white nearer its headwaters, so you get your choice of boating adventures. When you come back from your explorations, go ahead and work out any lingering soreness with a massage.

It’s true that the Carneros is a bit out of the way. It’s not really walking distance to anywhere else, unless you like a REALLY long walk. But while this region does sport its wonders—the hot springs, petrified forest, and Old-Faithful style geyser over near Calistoga all spring to mind—this is not the sort of place you’re going to be in a hurry to leave. The isolation may be a total non-issue if you never want leave the grounds. Actually, you may not want to leave even after your trip is supposed to be over. We could see this becoming a bit of a problem.

The Springhill Suites by Marriott Napa Valley is apparently all suites, though some are larger than others. This sounds VERY luxurious, but according to customer reviews, the Springhill Suites is actually just another place to sleep—but a very good place to sleep. Many people raved about the clean, comfortable facilities and friendly, helpful customer service. The breakfast buffet got mixed reviews, but it is complimentary, so no one seriously complained.

Definite pluses include the outdoor fire pit and the outdoor heated pool and hot tub. There’s a nice exercise facility, a business center, a custom built bar, and a 24-hour market, though what is sold at the market is not clear from the website. The suites include both comfortable beds and convenient pull-out sofa beds, a pantry, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker, plus a generous desk and both wired and wireless Internet, and iPod docking stations. There’s valet laundry service, always a perk for those who like cleanliness but not cleaning. The hotel is smoke free.

Springhill Suites is well-prepared to host business events; their business meeting services list actually includes a carpenter, along with such goodies as portable stages, AV equipment, and walkie-talkies. They will cater everything from breakfast to snacks to dinner for your event. They’ll be happy to host your wedding or social event as well. They can work with tiny, intimate events for five people, all the way up to big bashes for 250. They even have tents for outdoor events.

Overall, the impression given is solid, but low-key, affordable, but not “cheap” in a bad way. Their website helpfully provides several suggestions on how to get discounted rates (offered by AAA, for example), as well as information on where to go to eat and what to do while you’re in the area.

Speaking of doing things in the area, this IS Napa. That’s why you’d come here; the hotel is nice, it’s a means to an end. The end, the thing you’re probably going for, has something to do with the many fine, Michelin-rated restaurants and the hundreds of world-class wineries. You can find art and history museums, art galleries, restaurants and coffee houses with live jazz, theaters, movie houses, even an opera house and a symphony. There is also an excellent network of hiking and equestrian trails, and miles of county roads you’ll find quiet, scenic, and perfect for a long jog or an afternoon of cycling. Do you like to paddle? Most valleys have rivers at the bottom, and the Napa Valley is no exception. The Napa River runs quiet and slow in its lower reaches, and wild and white nearer its headwaters, so you get your choice of boating adventures. Don’t forget the many day spas in the area. If you find yourself sore after a day on the river, you can always book a relaxing massage.

Listen, in this region, if you want luxury, you can find it. If you want an outdoor adventure, they’ve got that here for you, too. If you want to drink some of the world’s best wines and eat some excellent food, if you want to hire skilled professionals to rub your back and smooth your feet while you eat chocolate and sip wine, you can do all of that. Staying at this hotel is an affordable way to get all of those goodies this region has to offer. We’ve said that before, often when there’s something about the hotel that explains why it’s so cheap. This is different; there’s nothing wrong with the place, and it’s hard to argue with clean, comfortable suites. You’ll like it. It’s just that you’re going to like the rest of the valley more.

And then there’s Motel 6. It’s kind of funny to actually review Motel 6, given that “Motel 6” is the standard insult for hotels hereabouts. When a customer wants to really make it obvious something is wrong, the phrase “Motel 6” almost inevitably comes up.

And yet, the actual Motel 6 seems to be a pretty nice place. It’s not upscale, exactly, but as a place to put yourself overnight it certainly gets the job done. Kids under 17 years old can stay for free with an adult family member. Pets (including cats) can stay for free in most cases, though a small fee may apply; the only limitation is that the animals cannot cause health or safety problems. Service animals are welcomed. Accessible rooms are available, and if you find that you cannot book the type of room you need on the website, you can call the office for further help. The hotel is Green-Key Certified, although it is not clear how many keys Motel 6 has earned, or which “green” programs they have in place. The facility is smoke-free.

There are places that cost $400 a night that can’t make these kinds of claims! Not all hotels in Napa accept children, let alone pets, and few of those that are pet-friendly are so unreservedly so as the Motel 6. They don’t offer to pamper your pet (or you), but they won’t turn away an animal just for being too big, either. As for “green,” there are a few other hotels in the area with some consideration for the planet, but Motel 6 is definitely a minority in a good way on this one.

One odd feature is that Motel 6 Napa is very hard to find customer reviews for. Searching for “Motel 6 Napa reviews” often yields reviews of all the other hotels in the area that have been accused of being Motel 6-ish, and not reviews of the actual Motel 6. Even reviews of the real Motel 6 tend to be for other locations in the region. A note on the website of the Motel 6 Napa says that it is a new location, and could explain our difficulty in collecting customer reviews. What we can say is that Motel 6 locations in the area tend to get good reviews; despite occasional complaints, the general consensus is that the chain has clean, functional rooms and friendly, helpful staff. Again, there are some pretty posh places that don’t get much better reviews then that.

Granted, you’re not going to find in-room spa treatments or complimentary terry-cloth robes here, but that’s not why you’d come here. You’d come stay at the Motel 6 Napa because you’re in the area and you need to sleep somewhere. You’ll be asleep most of the time you’re here, anyway. While you’re awake, you can go out and explore the Napa Valley.

From here, you have easy access to several excellent golf courses, a network of hiking and equestrian trails (we don’t know if a horse would fall under the Motel 6 definition of a “pet,” but it might be fun to find out), plenty of both white water and flat water paddling along the Napa River, and miles of quiet, scenic roads for cycling. You can explore hundreds of area wineries, and take your pick of the many fine restaurants in the valley. If you want high culture, this region boasts the Napa Opera House, the Oxbow Public Market, the Carolyn Parr Nature Museum, the Lincoln Theater, and the Napa Symphony. Check out the diRosa; it’s part art museum, part nature preserve, and part sheer, beautiful “huh?” in the most charming way. We could go on.

The point is that the Motel 6 is a means to an end, the end being staying in Napa without breaking the bank. We don’t think you’ll have n unpleasant time staying here, though.
