The Napa Valley Railroad ceased to operate regularly in 1987. When it shut down for good, a local group of business people decided to use the tracks to create a new attraction — the Napa Valley Wine Train. It began operation in 1989. Using the same track of the former train operation, the Napa Valley Wine Train took off on its journey from Napa's McKinstry Street Station. It passed through the towns of Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford before ending up at the foot of Mount Saint Helena. This is the route the train follows today as part of its 3-hour culinary and wine tasting experience. If you sign up to go aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train, be prepared to feast your eyes on both the visual and visceral. The beauty of the valley combines with the taste tingling experiences. Riding on old rails in vintage railroad cars adds to the overall flavor and savor of the event. One of the possibilities is enjoying a wine tasting and/or a romantic dinner in the reconditioned 1947 Vista Dome. You can also sit down and partake of a 3 or 4 course meal and dessert as part of the Gourmet Express. Alternatively, eat casually in the open air and sample from an a la carte menu in the Silverado. You may also want to take part in the on board wine tasting bar. You will have the chance to taste 100 different wines. You may also wish to purchase any of the 300 wines in the Wine Shop. For a truly unique experience hop on board the Napa Valley Wine Train during a Murder Mystery drama theater. This is one train ride you will never forget.
